While staying in Germany for a long weekend, to celebrate the 70th birthday of my father in law, we stayed in an appartement in a small town near Marburg in Germany. After a family dinner on the day of arrival and first full family day in Germany, I decided to set out early on the 3rd day for a morning stroll through the area.

The area contains mostly of forests, fields with hills. The evenings we drove back to our apartment, we almost always saw roe deers that were foraging.

The alarm went of at 5.20h and the sun rose at 6.08h. Time to go! Within a couple of minutes I was in a dense forrest and I could enjoy the singing of many birds. Woodpeckers, finches, tits, chiffchaffs and warblers. I heard a roe deer barking, which made my heart rate rise a bit in a dark forest.

After some time the sounds of the middle spotted woodpecker was right above me. Sun was just above the horizon so the forrest was really waking up now! Minutes after, I was face to face with a couple of roe deers which did not seem to bother me being there. I could take some great photos before moving on.

In an open field I again saw some roe deers foraging and while having one of them in my cameras viewfinder a European pine marter jumped through the field towards the bushes. This was a 100% lucky moment since I was obviously not expecting this marter to show itself! No time to manage my camera setting so photo is a bit grainy but who cares?

Needless to say, the walk was beautiful. On this 7.5 km walk I only saw one other person and tons of birds and other wildlife. Not all photos from below are from the walk but all photos are from the weekend in Germany. The Netherlands is a beautiful country with a lot of diversity in flora and fauna, but parts of Germany are so vast that hardly any human sounds can be heard. Here and there some agricultural vehicles, a plane high above you but no sound of roads with cars nearby. Nature gets the chance to be nature. With family living there, I’m pretty certain we’ll be back soon.
