One of my favorite winter visitors is the Great Grey Shrike (Klapekster). In previous years, it was still seen in the Goois nature reserve, but unfortunately, there have been no sightings this year. On a beautiful winter Sunday, I walked with my family over the heath in Leusden where it had been seen. However, on this day, more people had the idea to take such a long-awaited walk, so I suspected that the Great Grey Shrike was hiding.

My work schedule allowed me to go back late the next afternoon. After a 45-minute walk without finding the shrike, I decided to head back when I saw a white dot in a green tree in the distance. Yes, there it was! I was able to observe it from a distance as it flew towards me, hunting insects, moving from the ground to the tree and back to the ground. With the setting sun, I was able to take some beautiful pictures.
